Novembers Pick....

Novembers Pick....

Congress Book Club met last Thursday to discuss October's book of choice Positive Intelligence - why only 20% of teams and individuals achieve their true potential and how you can achieve yours by Shirzad Chamine.

There were divided opinions on this months book, with some struggling to finish the book and others saying the advice was very basic but we all enjoyed discussing the well-disguised mental Saboteurs ‘The Judge’.

Our choice of the month for November is ‘Group’ by Christie Tate.

“Group is a memoir of a guarded, over-achieving, self-lacerating young lawyer who reluctantly agrees to get psychologically and emotionally naked in a room of six complete strangers - her psychotherapy group. Group gives us a front row seat to the daring, exhilarating, painful, and hilarious journey that is group therapy.”

Septembers Pick....

Septembers Pick....

Congress Book Club met on Thursday the 24th of September to discuss this month's pick, Gravitas by Caroline Goyder.

For those who haven’t read the book or heard of the term Gravitas before, Caroline Goyder describes Gravitas as meaning:

“The ability to know, trust and settle into yourself and your purpose to the extent that you are able to truly listen to others and see the bigger picture. You know who you are, what matters and to own your words when you speak.

Gravitas is the grounding force that gives you influence and authority, with the lifting foce giving you passion and wit. Gravitas will give you the confidence to be yourself and the power to command the trust and respect of others.”

10 Quotes About The Magic Of Reading

We might be easing out of lockdown but many of us are having very different thoughts and feelings about our journey to a new ‘normal’.

If you are feeling blue about all the changes both past and ongoing or need somewhere to escape to inorder to get your creative juices flowing, what better way than to seek refuge in a fantastic book, where from the safety of your front room, a comfy blanket in a park or wherever you maybe, you can pick up a good book and be propelled on an exciting new journey, or to a far off galaxy or exotic lands.

Here are 10 quotes about the magic of reading and where a good book can take you….

  1. “Books allowed me to see a world beyond the front porch.…[and] the power to see possibilities beyond what was allowed at the time.” - Oprah Winfre

  2. “Reading is a discount ticket to everywhere.” – Mary Schmich

  3. “Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries.” –  Anne Herbert

  4. "There is no Frigate like a Book To take us Lands away" – Emily Dickinson

  5. “There are many little ways to enlarge your world.  Love of books is the best of all” – Jacqueline Kennedy

  6. “Books and doors are the same thing. You open them, and you go through into another world.” – Jeanette Winterson

  7. “Books can be dangerous. The best ones should be labeled ‘This could change your life.'” – Helen Exley

  8. “Literature is the most agreeable way of ignoring life.” – Fernando Pessoa

  9. “When you lose yourself in a book the hours grow wings and fly.” – Chloe Thurlow

July's Pick....

July's Pick....

Congress Book Club met again last Thursday to discuss the controversial and intriguing 'Stealing Fire' by New York Times Bestselling Author Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal. Stealing Fire takes the reader through a journey of alternative states to accelerate performance, whether through exercises, meditation or more controversially mirco-dosing…..

Our July's read is Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado-Perez

“Invisible Women takes on the neglected topic of what we don't know - and why. The result is a powerful, important and eye-opening analysis of the gender politics of knowledge and ignorance. With examples from technology to natural disasters, this is an original and timely reminder of why we need women in the leadership of the institutions that shape every aspect of our lives.” (Cordelia Fine)…………….

June's Pick....

June's Pick....

Congress's first book club meeting was in full swing last Thursday as we discussed So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport. Cal explains a logical approach to looking at your career and takes the pressure away from achieving a perfect, passion filled career right now. The consensus was it offered a more practical way to finding a dream job.

This month Congress Book Club will be reading Stealing Fire by New York Times Bestselling Author Steven Kotler.

Welcome to Congress Book Club

Welcome to Congress Book Club

Every Month we will pick one career book or a book that has a woman at the centre of the story to share with book club members.

Congress book club is open to any of Congress members who want to read more and build connections within the Congress Community.

“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.” - Mason Cooley

How it works:

April's Pick....

April's Pick....

So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport

We all want to be successful, whatever that might mean to us. At previous Congress events we have talked a lot about discovering your own values and finding what your personal idea of success is. Success is not the same for everyone and that is a wonderful thing, as the saying goes - variety is the spice of life. However, sometimes we forget to think about success in individual terms and focus more on the traditional ideologies of what success is, which can lead to us not enjoying our careers or feeling unfulfilled.
